3 Tips for News Orgs Using Instagram
By Anthony Quintano, Community Manager
Instagram is a photo sharing service that has gained over two million users since its debut. At NBC News, we started experimenting with the application four months ago and our account has since developed a unique community.
I've started to notice what works and what doesn't work on the emerging platform and below are three tips.
1) Upload Original Photos that Share a Unique Perspective
While technology has made capturing beautiful images easier than ever before, you still have to focus on taking good pictures. Our account is shared by a couple of producers who post photos from their mobile devices in the field, our bureaus and the very photogenic setting of Rockefeller Center. We try to make sure that each image is adding value to the community.
2) Thank and Follow Other Instagram Users
It is tempting to use Instagram to just broadcast images, but the community wants to interact. It has been very important for us to respond to comments as well as follow regular commenters on our account.
3) Search for User Content
Since Instagram implemented search within the app, the community has become more interactive by using hashtags. For example, I've noticed many users post pictures when they visit 30 Rockefeller Plaza and I search for those images as often as possible.
The amount of time and effort that an org puts into an account can be seen by the number of "likes" on each photo. I appreciate everyone who has liked our pictures and welcome any suggestions on how to improve.
